Collaboration Now

Monday, October 20, 2008

Two thumbs up to Andy for another great CNBC appearance on last night’s series Collaboration Now. Throughout the show guests repeatedly stated that the outcome of great collaboration is more and better ideas. As we think about the role of inspiration in innovation, I pose the question: Is getting inspired a solo task or collaborative effort?

Play has been published in Ronald E. Riggio's The Art of Followership. Fellow contributors include James MacGregor Burns, Jean Lipman-Blumen, and Ira Chaleff.

Andy and Patty share indispensable insight to leaders of innovative change in their chapter, "Effective Followership for Creativity and Innovation: A Range of Colors and Dimensions." In chapter twenty-one to be exact, they break the matrix model of effective followership for creativity and innovation down into colors red and blue and dimensions 1-D to 3-D. In the model, color measures enthusiasm, energy, and emotion, while dimensions channel the depth of perception behind a follower’s problem-solving capabilities and potential.

The four combinations this model yields provide the framework for the different types of effective followers: Creative Catalysts, Creative Supporters, Creative Skeptics, and Creative Statics. Recommendations and helpful insight for each blend of creative follower are additionally examined through what Play calls “Plus, Delta” strategies. “Plus” is to value-added quality of a follower as “Delta” is to tactics for the follower’s growth.

Applause for hard work and a job well-done.

I'd like to build on the following definition of Inspiration that Andy found at the Cooper Hewitt museum: "The rousing of the intellect or emotion to a state of heightened feeling, action or invention." Poet David Whyte refers to this as soul: "Corporations must make room for the presence of soul if they expect employees to change their behavior and contribute more to the enterprise." What's the first step that encourages inspiration? What's the symptom in an organization where inspiration is lacking?

Probably "your voice." Whyte says, "Your voice in an organization is an invitation to participate. Without this, people do not feel they exist in a company. " That's so true. We often see a reticence to speak up, or share a less-than-perfectly-formed thought. As I have been thinking about what the progression or model for inspiration might be for Play, the notion of exploring, and trusting "your voice" seems to be a component. Without sharing, or feeling as though you can speak about the connections that inspiration brings, how does inspiration live or add value?
