People are great, aren’t they?
They confuse us, awe us, disappoint us, and most of all they alter the way we see the world. Years ago, a friend of mine dated a mechanic who happened to be obsessed with Mini Coopers and 4 months later she found herself presenting (much to her own shock and dismay) her senior design project that visually mapped how many Minis she saw each day in a 3 month period and how the total number and color related to her feelings about her boyfriend on that day. Awesome. It is amazing how one interaction can cause the day to shift suddenly and permanently.
This had me asking the question, who shifted my day? Well, yesterday it was Laney Martin and Jonathan Mooney. Laney, my niece, has a rare genetic disease called Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (check it out at http://www.22q13.org/). She has opened my eyes to everything from gluten-free diets to sign language to Floortime (as a method of developmental play) to the hardship of educating gifted and challenged children in our country. Due to her, I found myself sitting in on a presentation by Jonathan Mooney (http://www.jonathanmooney.com/) at Denver University. Check him out...
The day changing part of Jonathan’s talk was a single question, “when did we wake up in a world where a single human difference is considered to be somehow wrong?” Put another way, “when did we allow the myth of normalcy to be created?” I can’t get this question out of my head. Thanks to Laney and Jonathan for altering…well…everything.
Who shifted your day? How was your view of the world altered?
