It’s taken 18 years of school and a multitude of projects for me to realize how much I love to work in groups. A former advocate of individual projects, I’m now a group-project enthusiast! That’s why I love my on-campus job: I am the copy editor of my student newspaper. I get to read all of the stories before they are even published, and I can add my ideas and make suggestions to make them better. I used to take offense to others editing and making suggestions about my articles, pieces of writing or ideas in general, but through my role as copy editor I’ve learned that the more people who make suggestions and add to the original piece of work, the better the product will be in the end.

I love collaborating with people on ideas for projects and goals because I’ve learned that no one person has all of the answers. While working with my group on a communication training project last semester, I came up with the best (or what I thought was the best) way to introduce ourselves to the class. When I shared this with my group, they built off my ideas and we added elements to make our intro even more exciting. For one of the first times, I didn’t take offense to someone editing my idea – I got excited about it.

My name is Colleen McCarron and I’m applying for an internship position at Play. I hope to initiate new ideas and be a Play team player.
