The World Is My Oyster

We at Play encourage our interns to take a hands on approach to our business. We begin that hands on approach in our application process. Each applicant is asked to post to our blog as a way for us to get to know them and their thinking styles as well as a way for us to gain new perspectives. Below is the first of our intern applicants for 2009.

My name is Kelly Swope and I am applying for the internship position for the summer of 2009. Last summer I had the wonderful opportunity and experience of being a kayak guide in Charleston, South Carolina. One of the greatest challenges was the ever-changing and undependable wildlife. I grew fond a marine animal that is not quite so playful; the oyster. After reading about what the seemingly stationary shellfish can do I was stunned.

They are filter feeders, similar to the blue whale. By sucking in water and filtering over gills they absorb and digest food. Each oyster can filter seven to eight gallons of watera day. Because the tides are on a 6 hour cycle they are only feeding for half the day. That is equivalent to you and I drinking 84 cans of soda in a 12 hour period. It is through this filter feeding system that oysters produce pearls, which is caused by a sand irritation inside the mouth of the oyster.

I enjoy learning new things and looking deeper to find the beauty in the world that surrounds me, even oysters. From what I have learned about Play thus far, that feeling is a mutual one. I look forward to an opportunity to tell you why Play should be my next big summer adventure.
