FloydFest 7: A Family Affair

Monday, August 04, 2008

When I found out I would be shooting FloydFest 7 on assignment for Jambase.com, I knew it would be a departure from the regular concert photography routine. But nothing could have prepared me for the sheer variety of stuff that arises when a diverse group of people all comes together for one weekend of music, art, and camping. It was a photographer's dream. Most of the photographers I saw there spent all their time up at the stage, but by doing that they failed to capture the environment that differentiates a festival from a run-of-the-mill concert. Do you ever fall into the trap of focusing on the immediate and obvious while neglecting some potentially significant peripheral details?

The entire gallery can be found at http://morgangh.smugmug.com ; feel free to check it out.

My tripod fell over during this long-exposure shot of people with glowsticks. Mistakes often create something great!

The infamous space alien dinosaur I mentioned in morning meeting...

David Grisman talking to a young mandolin player. What a great guy; he signed the kid's shirt and let him play his mandolin!

Always stay on your toes with your lens cap off, because you never know when opportunities like this will arise!

I love how everyone experiencing the same event has a unique reaction.
