Just an excerpt to share.  I know, I know, I talk about this guy a lot…but the ol’ English teacher in me loves this metaphor.

From The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America by David Whyte:

“The luminous sword that Beowulf snatches in the depths of his interior struggle is like a point of light concentrated from the fiery depths into which he has let himself fall.  This is a marvelous image of our struggles for the merest touch of creativity in the workplace.  Out of the maelstrom of events and the ever-changing patterns around us we take hold of something small, sharp, and substantial, and down in the depths, hidden from others, change our existence in the light-filled world above.”
