Pandora, The Music Genome Project

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Pandora.com is a website created in January of 2000 in which musicians and music experts came together to develop "The Music Genome Project". This group's vision was to classify different songs and musical groups in a way like humans are made up of genes. Every song has a similar "DNA make-up" to other music.

The website allows for a user, for free, to create radio station-like playlists that feature other songs and musicians that resemble the initial song or musician the user wanted to hear. For instance, if I wanted to hear Jack Johnson, the website would let me hear a song by Jack Johnson but the next song could be by Dispatch or another song that shares qualities or "genes" of the initial song/artist searched, and so on.

After the user signs up, he or she can create many different playlists that resemble the music off of the initial search.

This is for free, at the moment, because the user cannot download the music. The website acts for like a mix between radio and iTunes.
